Abstract
Despite immense political and economic changes in the twentieth century, certain aspects of traditional Chinese culture continue to be influential in contemporary business and society. Very many day-to-day social interactions, including those that comprise business, continue to be guided by elements of traditional Chinese culture. This is especially so regarding Chinese perspectives on ethics and business. Contrary to many first- and second-hand reports that doing business in and with China involves no ethics at all, China is not a place without ethics. To resolve this apparent contradiction, one must understand the foundations of traditional Chinese ethics and culture, so as to grasp the fundamentally different starting points of Chinese and Western approaches to ethics and business.
