Abstract
Confucianism continues to influence culture and society in Hong Kong, Taiwan and on mainland China as well as in Japan, South Korea, and Vietnam. Its ideas influence the day-to-day activities, including business and commerce, of over 21% of the world’s population (US Census Bureau 2020). As a way of life, Confucianism is considered both a philosophy and a religion, one which exists side by side with Daoism (“Taoism”), Buddhism, Animism, and other beliefs about the natural and supernatural world. On the whole, Confucianism focuses primarily on human lives and how they may best be lived. Among its core values are benevolence (rén 仁, also translated “humaneness”), wisdom (zhì 智), propriety (lĭ 禮), uprightness (yì 義), and filial conduct (xiào 孝). Confucian notions of filial conduct emphasize family and respect for seniority, especially male seniority (Ames and Rosemont 1999).
