Abstract

Dr. Helen Moritz taught in the classics department at Santa Clara University for over 30 years. She was born and raised in St. Louis, MO, before she moved to the Chicago area for high school. She was the first in her family to go to college, where she attended Dominican University, formerly known as Rosary College, before applying to grad school. She studied classics, and finished her degrees at UChicago and the University of Minnesota before coming to work at SCU. In addition to teaching at Santa Clara, she served on various committees and had many administrative roles. She was the founding dean of the Drahmann Center and served as the Vice Provost for undergraduate education. She was in charge of residential learning communities, which are still a foundation of Santa Clara today. She was also the chair of three different departments during her time at SCU: classics, modern languages, and the english department. Her research focused on comparative drama. She now continues to give back to the Santa Clara community in many ways.
