Abstract
Dr. William Prior was born on May 16, 1946, in Rutland, Vermont. He received his BA at Michigan State University, followed by his PhD at the University of Texas. At Santa Clara, his research and teaching interests included ancient philosophy, ethical theory, the history of skepticism, and the philosophy of Wittgenstein. He specialized in virtue ethics and ancient philosophy, particularly Socrates and Plato. He taught at the University of Colorado at Boulder from 1975-1986, and retired from Santa Clara University in 2013. He has numerous books and publications, including Virtue and Knowledge: an Introduction to Ancient Greek Ethics, and Ancient Philosophy: A Beginner’s Guide. His book Virtue and Knowledge was listed by Choice as an Outstanding Academic Book of 1991. In addition to his publications, Professor Prior is widely recognized for his excellence in teaching and mentoring. He received Santa Clara University’s Brutocao Award for Teaching Excellence in 2009, the University’s highest teaching honor.
