Abstract

This thesis explores the idea that every baptized Christian is called to missionary discipleship, rooted in a personal friendship with Jesus. Inspired by Pope Francis' vision of missionary discipleship, and drawing from my own experience and the experiences of others, I show how praying with Scripture leads to a deeper relationship with Jesus, which becomes the source of true missionary enthusiasm.

The study focuses on John 15: 1-17, where Jesus calls us to remain in Him as the vine and branches, and examines how this relationship shapes our identity and mission as Christians. Using biblical, theological, and pastoral approaches, and drawing on Avery Dulles' "Herald" model of Church, the thesis discusses the foundations of discipleship, the meaning of being a herald of the Word, and practical ways this can be lived out, especially within the Verbum Dei Missionary Fraternity.

The findings highlight that missionary discipleship is not just for a few people, but for all baptized Christians, and that living as friends of Jesus brings joy and fruitfulness to our faith and mission. The thesis concludes by affirming the importance of integrating friendship with Jesus and the proclamation of the Word as essential to living out our baptismal calling today. It also identifies the integration of contemplation and action as an important area for further study.
