Abstract
Navigating large university campuses efficiently can be challenging for students, faculty, staff, and visitors alike. Our research, including a comprehensive survey of the campus community, revealed dissatisfaction with current navigation options and the need for a solution to allow Santa Clara University community members to quickly and easily find campus locations. In response to this need, we developed the SCU Maps app, a mobile application for the SCU community that utilizes the user's phone camera to identify the user's current location, allows the user to select from a number of destinations on campus, and provides turn-by-turn directions with virtual arrows overlaid on the user's surroundings using Augmented Reality.
We successfully met our project objectives of providing an app for both iOS and Android devices that can support both indoor and outdoor destinations and enables SCU community members to quickly and efficiently find their way to different campus locations. We were able to provide the app to numerous SCU community members who provided very positive feedback on the app. We recommend for the University to provide additional funding to enable release of the application to the broader SCU community.
