Abstract
The Imitation of Christ by the German-Dutch theologian Thomas à Kempis (1380–1471) is regarded as one of the most influential devotional manuals of all time. Like Kempis’s work, Boff’s The Following of Jesus sets out to provide practical guidance for one’s spiritual life. On the face of it, this short book appears quite basic. After a brief introductory section (14 pp.), the book presents selective passages from Kempis’s work (7 pp.) followed by Boff’s own Kempis-inspired reply (109 pp.). With no footnotes or scholarly excursions, the style is conversational and accessible.
