Abstract
The limited range of the RF spectrum simply cannot keep up with the communication needs of the future. Visible light communication (VLC) is an alternative way of transmitting data that consumes less power and offers a more secure communication link compared to RF communications. This paper discusses a potential application of a VLC system in today’s society. In order to demonstrate VLC, we will create a system that uses VLC in a practical application that will improve consumer advertising. We will design and create a light emitting diode (LED) fixture that department stores can use to transmit personalized deals and coupons to consumers. We will also create an Android smartphone application that consumers can use to view these coupons and deals.
