Abstract

Afforestation has critically emerged and been widely adopted for ecological restoration and climate change resilience in rural India.

There is a rise in carbon credit schemes and their integration of small farmers into global environmental markets; the relevance of such schemes, however, must not be measured solely by carbon returns. This research explores the larger social, economic, and cultural context of afforestation by conducting a mixed-methods analysis of tree-planting actions undertaken by FCF India, with special regard to the experiences of farmers in Assam. We seek to gauge whether such non-carbon aspects offer transparent and measurable channels of value, and what difficulties emerge in attempting to measure and forecast such diverse and multifaceted outcomes.
