Abstract
In an essay about Hrotsvit of Gandersheim's prefaces, dedications, and other addresses to readers published in A Companion to Hrotsvit of Gandersheim1 I focus on evidence suggesting Hrotsvit believed that all Christians, including women, have a responsibility for the mission Christ assigned to his apostles immediately before his ascension. I also note that she shared this belief with the Venerable Bede (pp. 236-7), citing as evidence Alan Thacker's argument in his essay ,,Bede's Ideal of Reform" that the Venerable Bede's ,,later writings were permeated with a vision of reform in church and society which was to leave its mark on more than his own generation." Bede ,,even envisaged women preachers" in his Homilies, De Templo, and In Ezram2 This may be evidence of more influence of Bede on Hrotsvit, who uses the verb ,,to preach" (praedicare) more than once to denote her action as a writer, than has been acknowledged in the past.
