Abstract
Lourdes Portillo is one of the few Chicanas who, during the last 14 years, has written and directed films while expanding the documentary format. Portillo was born in 1944 in Chihuahua, Mxico and the United States. In fact, the crossing of cultures and languages becomes one of the most important characteristics of her work. In her films, Portillo creates a new visual language, with a blend of documentary and poetic self-awareness, switching between cultures in order to map a space in which the audience can see the many voices of the Chicana experience.
