Abstract

This thesis presents the design and evaluation of a handheld indoor positioning system intended for GPS-denied environments such as museums and other large interior spaces. Conventional indoor positioning approaches often depend on dense fixed infrastructure or suffer from sensor drift that accumulates over time. We investigate a portable, infrastructure-light approach that estimates a user’s three-dimensional position by combining inertial sensing with radiofrequency- based spatial referencing and a learned correction stage. This work describes the overall system architecture, the experimental evaluation of several candidate sensing methods, and the construction of a photogrammetric ground-truth reference used to assess positioning accuracy. The result is a self-contained device that demonstrates the feasibility of accurate indoor localization without permanent installed infrastructure.
