Abstract
SCAN is a software product to computerize library functions for the charity Friends of African Village Libraries. It is composed of a database, a website, and a mobile application. The system is a robust, easy to use library management tool that can be used by librarians in rural Africa as well as administrators in the United States. SCAN computerizes key clerical tasks such as checking out and returning books, adding or removing books from a library, and generating lists of overdue books. This allows both librarians and administrators to spend more time helping these rural communities and less time handling paperwork while simultaneously improving the accuracy of those records by reducing transcription errors.
