Abstract

The “Name IT! Automated WorkCell” project presents the design and implementation of an automated workcell for fabricating customized name tags and signage for Santa Clara University. Addressing the challenges with the current acquisition of signage and name tags on campus motivated the focus of this project. Long lead times, high costs, and inconsistency of signage and name tags on campus are what this workcell can mitigate by providing an in-house manufacturing solution. The work cell integrates multiple mechanical and software subsystems to function as a cohesive unit. Materials transportation, laser cutting, quality checks, backing application, web interfacing, DexArm communication, error handling, and Arduino components collaboratively operate the system. The materials handling subsystem employs a DexArm robotic arm with suction-based and magnetic-gripping end-effectors to transport materials. The laser cutting subsystem performs precise cutting and engraving to produce custom designs. The quality control subsystem uses a camera-based process to identify structural or visual defects, with defective items sorted into a fail bucket. The backing application subsystem attaches adhesive backings to the finished products. By consolidating production in-house, this project demonstrates the potential for cost reduction, improved uniformity, and enhanced customization for users of campus name tags and signage.
