Abstract

The present volume contains a number of original contributions by authors from a variety of countries, disciplines, and theoretical orientations. Despite the diversity of the contributions, there is an underlying cohesion to be found in a common set of themes that focus on social structure and social change and their relationship to mass communications.

The authors indicate in their contributions the tentative nature of the evidence we have concerning communication and social change. We are at the stage in our data collection that involves description and not explanation. However, most authors also outline a number of suggestions about where future research on change and structure in mass communication should be heading. The agenda is rich and expansive indeed. It suggests that there is work to be done at the different stages of identification and description of research questions, hypothesis testing, and theory building and that this work stems from a focus on social change and social structure in the mass communication arena.
