Abstract

The paper reviews the hoped for potential of communication technology in nonformal education in Latin America. What has been missing in most cases where technology has been tried is a thorough evaluation of its impact. The Latin American radio schools are one of the largest nonformal education efforts in Latin America that use such technology. The paper suggests five levels of evaluation that could be followed in studying the impact of radio schools. These levels are effort, performance, adequacy, efficiency and process. Each is defined and research implications discussed for radio schools. A general assessment of radio schools is presented.
