Abstract

In 1969, El Salvador initiated a major educational reform, concentrating on grades seven through nine. As part of a comprehensive four year evaluation of the project, student aspirations were examined. This paper describes student occupational and educational aspirations, analyzes the relation between aspirations and the social and parental variables which may influence then, and reports on what the first graduates did during the year after their graduation. The contrast between high expressed aspirations and the likely inability of the Salvadorian economy to satisfy them is considered in detail.
