Abstract
Wilbur Schramm is considered a founder of the field of modern communication study. In 1948 he created the first graduate program in mass communication at the University of Illinois, but he also began to establish the discipline with his many early books designated as communication. He was an able administrator and remarkable fund-raiser who built academic programs at Iowa and Illinois and then at Stanford and the East–West Center in Hawaii over 40 years. He made significant contributions in development and social change, education and media, and helped to create public television in the United States. He is a key figure in the history of a field that has become global in the 21st century.
