Abstract
Irradiation (λ > 285 nm) of [ReBr6]2 − in aerated or deoxygenated ethanol yields ReO4 −, in contrast to other coordinating solvents, in which the observed reaction is photosolvation. Spectral changes imply that photooxidation occurs by an initial photosolvation, followed by reduction of coordinated ethanol in a secondary photochemical reaction.
