Abstract

For decades clinical psychology has been the most popular specialty area within psychology at the graduate, postgraduate, and professional levels (American Psychological Association, 2001; Mayne, Norcross, & Sayette, 2006). The remarkable amount of public attention that clinical psychologists such as Phillip McGraw (aka Dr. Phil) receive, as well as the frequency with which clinical psychologists are portrayed in movies, television programs, novels, and other media outlets is a testament to the popularity and intrigue of clinical psychology among the general population. This article overviews the field of clinical psychology and provides information about definitions, training, employment settings, activities, subspecialties, and current and future trends.
