Abstract

Information technology has become a principal component of both daily operations and strategic initiatives in many industries. Its classical role has been to provide desktop tools for personal productivity applications and access to corporate financial and sales data. But hightechnology industries are making additional and ever-growing demands on IT. Increased communication requirements resulting from geographically dispersed manufacturing facilities and the need for prompt access to process control data are making it the sine qua non of organizations.
