Abstract

The goal of this project is to begin the development of an autonomous vehicle (AV) platform aimed at allowing members of the Santa Clara University community to develop their skills in the field of vehicle autonomy. This project encompasses the first year of a multi-year project and was focused on specifying and installing the required hardware to allow the vehicle (a golf cart) to be controlled by a laptop. This report discusses the decisions made when designing system-level and component-level hardware and software, as well as the intricate documentation of all engineering work in order to allow the next group to easily continue where this year’s project left off. Installed components including actuators, encoders, and electronic steering motor all operate to the standards demanded of them and the control system that was developed alongside the vehicle works as intended. Finally, we specify possible next steps for future projects to build off of the work completed this year.
