Abstract
This research uncovers underlying characteristics of successful clean water franchisees within the current Jibu network in Rwanda and provides a basis for the future Jibu franchisee application process. The study spanned four weeks and was conducted on site in Kigali, Rwanda. A comprehensive primary data set was compiled, including both qualitative and quantitative captures, through 40 interviews (20 franchisees and 20 staff from franchise organizations) and by collecting ethnographic field notes during the franchise visits. Through subsequent analysis, the study was able to identify characteristics that portend a successful franchisee: Commitment to Jibu’s Mission and Community; Organizational and Educational Previous Experiences; and Financial, Communication, and Organizational Skills. Jibu franchisees who demonstrated proficiency in all of these categories were more likely to run their storefronts at a high production level and to reach sales targets consistently. The research team further explores predictors of potential franchisee success, including commitment to Jibu’s community, responsiveness to Jibu’s financial incentives, and willingness to participate in Jibu’s skill-building opportunities as elements to consider when recruiting franchisees in the future.
