The Foot Washing (John 13:1-20): An Experiment in Hermeneutics
Catholic Biblical Association of America
This article offers an interpretation of the account of the footwashing in Jn 13:1-20 that is simultaneously valid from the standpoint of traditional historical critical method and meaningful for the contemporary Christian reader. The hermeneutical principles presupposed by the interpretation are stated at the outset; the interpretive process is then carried out; the project is reviewed in order to show how the use of traditional exegetical methods is modified in the process.
